The radiative forcing index (RFI) measures a particular factor's influence on the climate. It is calculated by comparing the amount of radiation that is absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere to the amount of radiation that is reflected back into space. This measure helps to quantify the effects of different factors on the climate, such as changes in the number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, changes in the number of aerosols, or changes in land use. The higher the RFI, the greater the impact on the climate.
The radiative forcing index (RFI) for aviation is a measure of the impact of aviation on the climate, based on the amount of radiative forcing (RF) emitted by aircraft. It is calculated as the total aircraft-related RF divided by the total RF of all other sources combined. The RFI for aviation can be used to compare the climate impact of different sources of aviation emissions, such as airline operations and air traffic management. The higher the RFI, the greater the impact of aviation on the climate.
